A Message from Dr. Bruce Bloom…
An invitation to Health
“Human Physiology begins & ends with two essential functions — your ability to create energy and your ability to clear out waste …most of us are not doing either one effectively.”
“Accumulation of toxins can cause a myriad of health issues, leading to the slow insidious breakdown of our internal regulatory systems, putting us at risk for Chronic Degenerative Disease.”
“I am devoted to educating you about your brilliantly designed body. You and I will now become partners to understand how your specific unique system works, how it heals and how to maintain well being.”
About Functional Medicine
A Functional Medicine Practitioner assesses the patient’s fundamental clinical imbalances through careful history taking, physical examination, and laboratory testing.
The following factors are taken into consideration:
- Environmental inputs that affect your health: The air you breathe — the water you drink — the particular diet you eat — the quality of the food available to you — your level of physical exercise — toxic exposures — traumas you have experienced
- Mind-Body Connections: Psychological, spiritual, and social factors all can have profound influences on your health.
- Genetic makeup: Although individual genes may make you more susceptible to some diseases, your DNA is not an unchanging blueprint for your life. Emerging research shows that your genes may be influenced by everything in your environment, as well as your experiences, attitudes, and beliefs. This means it is possible to change the way genes are activated and expressed.
Biomarkers:
- An assessment of the underlying causes and triggers of dysfunction:
- How efficient does your body produce energy
- How efficient does your body rids itself of waste & toxins
- Regulation of hormones & neurotransmitters
- Immune system function
- Inflammatory responses
- Health of the digestive tract - digestion & absorption of nutrients
- Structural integrity
These processes are influenced by environmental factors and your genetic make-up. When they are disturbed or imbalanced, they lead to symptoms, which can lead to disease if effective interventions are not applied.
A Comprehensive Approach to Treatment:
Most imbalances in functionality can be addressed. Some can be completely restored to optimum function, and others can be substantially improved.
- Prevention is paramount – virtually every complex chronic disease is preceded by long-term disturbances in functionality that can be identified and effectively managed.
- Change how systems function - apply a wide array of effective interventions, which can have a major impact on your health.
- Functional medicine’s tool kit – treatments may include combinations of nutritional supplements, botanical medicines, therapeutic food programs, detoxification techniques as well as counseling on lifestyle, exercise or stress management.
Remember:
“Assessment of Function is very different from assessing failure, and very different from prescribing pharmaceuticals. We are operating within an arena called ‘Loss of Function’, where most of us reside, and where there is an opportunity for recovery of function.”
“Unlike a traditional doctor’s visit where you drop your body off at 4:00 and come back at 5:00, we are forming a partnership, attempting to assess what the best plan of action is to improve your level of health at this time.”
“We try to do as complete an assessment as possible, but understand there are many variables which reveal themselves as you go along this process. The way your body responds, both positively and negatively is valuable information that is needed to better understand the inner workings of your specific system. Therefore, any reactions should be noted and communicated to best serve your needs.”
